Whale of a Tale by Rodney Bursiel is a landscape-oriented color photograph capturing a humpback whale's tail rising majestically from the icy waters of Antarctica. The massive fluke fills the frame, water cascading in elegant ribbons from its trailing edge, backlit so that each droplet catches the cold Antarctic light. Behind it, the craggy face of a glacier rises as a blue-grey wall, grounding the image in the raw scale and severity of the landscape. Presented as a floated torn-paper print in a champagne gold shadow-box frame, the soft irregular edges of the photograph add an almost journal-like intimacy to what is otherwise a scene of tremendous natural power, a perfect circle closing between warm tropical waters and one of the wildest places on earth.
